NU was created as a school for adult learners, so we’re not surprised to see that the CAE-validated Online Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity is designed for working professionals. Courses are only 4 weeks long and delivery is often asynchronous. NU will also accept credit transfers for professional or technical certifications, as well as military training & experience. However, since NU can be more expensive than public options, it’s worth investigating scholarship opportunities.

Unlike traditional brick & mortar universities, NU isn’t going to lend a lot of support with co-op experiences and internships. So that’s why we’d recommend high school graduates look elsewhere in our rankings. Having said that, NU does offer BS concentrations in Computer Network Defense, Digital Forensics, or Information Technology Management. So it may work well for IT folks who need to improve a specific skill set.

Core Elements of a Cybersecurity Bachelor’s Degree

Admissions Process

Baseline Requirements

Universities are usually happy to accept a wide range of candidates into a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. In fact, many bachelor’s degrees in cybersecurity are designed for working professionals, continuing education students, and military servicemembers.

Generally speaking, schools will be looking for:

  • Educational Background: High school diploma or the equivalent (GED). Degree completion programs may ask for proof of an associate degree or equivalent credits & experience.
  • GPA: Each school will have a different minimum threshold. It can range from 2.0 to 3.0 or more.
  • Standardized Test Scores: Some universities will ask for SAT or ACT scores; some make these tests optional.
  • Prerequisite Coursework: Candidates will usually be expected to provide proof of high school courses in mathematics (e.g. Calculus), science (e.g. Physics), computer science fundamentals, English, and social sciences.

Some undergraduate cybersecurity degree programs will also request to see letters of recommendation, a personal statement or essay, and your résumé. Non-native English speakers will usually be expected to submit proof of language proficiency through test scores (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS).

Credit Transfers

If you have any previous experience, find out if you qualify for credit transfers. You may be able to transfer a large number of credits into your BS in Cybersecurity for a wide variety of reasons. These may include:

  • Previous College-Level Coursework
  • Professional Certifications
  • Military Education & Experience
  • Standardized Exams
  • Workplace Learning
  • Google Certificates
  • Vocational & Technical Training

Common Course Requirements

Core Coursework

Core courses for a BS in Cybersecurity will often be split between fundamental concepts in computing & networks and security-specific topics. In the first few years, you will be tackling courses such as:

  • Programming
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Operating Systems
  • Networks
  • System Administration
  • Linux Fundamentals

Once you’ve mastered skills in computing & networks, you can start to address how to protect them, with courses in areas such as:

  • Network Security
  • Operating System Security
  • Cloud Computing Security
  • Mobile Security
  • Intrusion Detection & Incident Response
  • Ethical Hacking & Penetration Testing
  • Digital Forensics
  • Introduction to Cryptography
  • Cybersecurity Policies & Ethics

Each BS degree will have its own unique slant, so we recommend examining the curriculum links carefully before you make a decision.

Concentrations

A number of universities also offer BS concentrations in cybersecurity specialty areas. Examples of undergraduate cybersecurity concentrations or tracks could include:

  • Network Defense
  • Digital Forensics
  • Information Assurance
  • Cyber Operations
  • Cloud Security
  • IT Management

This is just a sample of what’s out there—there will be many more options.

Tip: Keep in mind that some BS in Cybersecurity degrees will allow you to customize your plan of study with a lot of cyber electives. In this way, you can create your own concentration.

What to Look For in Coursework

Even if universities are offering the same cybersecurity courses, they may not be delivering them in the same way. It’s important to establish whether you’d like to acquire fundamental theoretical knowledge in your classes or you’d really like to focus on hands-on applications.

For instance, one SNHU alumnus has noted that the CAE-validated Online Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity leans toward theory and away from offensive skills:

“All of the theory is applicable and some of the labs are handy. Please note this is cybersecurity, if you are looking for hands on network administration, server administration, hacking or penetration etc – really anything that isn’t theory – this is not the degree path for you.”

Always talk to recent BS alumni to get a sense of whether the core coursework has proved applicable to the workplace.

Tip: We particularly favor universities like Champlain that provide a full list of software, technical platforms, and programming languages that are included in the curriculum.

Program Structure & Activities

Hands-On Labs

The best Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity programs balance training in fundamental theoretical concepts with hands-on experiences in labs and security simulations. Universities like to boast about hands-on training, so you will need to ask around to decide how serious they are.

For example, one student of WGU’s Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity noted:

“If you’re entering the program to change careers you’re going to need projects on your resume as well as ways to communicate your hands on experiences. This is a HUGE missing hole in the program for career pivoters. There aren’t enough hands-on projects. No threat hunting, malware analysis, SIEM labs, PenTesting Labs, CTF.”

This may be one of the reasons why WGU is more popular with mid-career professionals who can get their hands-on experiences within their workplace.

You can supplement any gaps in your skill sets by training on outside platforms such as TryHackMe, but that will be an extra level of commitment. Talk to alumni and ask if you can monitor a lab before you commit to the degree.

Certification Preparation

Look for schools that embed preparation for cybersecurity certifications into the curriculum. WGU is the most famous example—the CAE-validated Online Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance includes prep for 15 industry certifications within the plan of study. But there are plenty more (e.g. NEIT). Before you apply, ask the program coordinator for a list of certifications that BS students commonly earn.

Internships

Recent high school graduates should prioritize bachelor’s programs in cybersecurity that include internship opportunities with well-known companies. Although a self-paced program like WGU may be popular with working professionals, it won’t help as much with career networking. As one alumnus noted:

“The real advantages I’ve seen from the UTSA BBA vs WGU are the local internship opportunities. I’ve seen a large number of folks finishing the BBA, getting an internship at my company, then being hired full time. My WGU post-placement experience was the “Handshake” program, where I was relentlessly pursued for helpdesk-type roles.”

In our rankings, we’ve noted which undergraduate programs have mandatory internships embedded in the curriculum. However, universities like UTSA also offer internships through their cybersecurity research & education centers. For example, both UMGC’s Center for Security Studies and Champlain’s Leahy Center for Digital Investigation & Cybersecurity have developed training and internship opportunities for undergraduates.

Co-Op Experiences

Co-operative education combines classroom-based training with practical work experience. For a stellar example of an undergraduate degree in cybersecurity that features co-ops, have a look at the University of Cincinnati’s CAE-validated Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity.

Beginning in the second year, students in the BS program are required to alternate semesters of classroom instruction with semesters of full-time, paid work in the IT industry. By the time they graduate, cybersecurity students at UC have the equivalent of 1+ years of professional experience.

Cyber Clubs & Competitions

When possible, get involved in the university’s cybersecurity clubs and put your hand up to participate in cyber competitions. For example, UMGC’s Cybersecurity Competition Team is composed of students, alumni, and faculty. The team trains in UMGC’s Virtual Security Lab and regularly participates in MAGIC CTF and Hack the Box.

You can also ask the program coordinator if the university is affiliated with any cyber organizations. For example, Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University have close ties to the Coastal Virginia Cybersecurity Student Association (CVCSA). The CVCSA hosts CyberForge, an annual conference and CTF event for students.

Capstone/Final Project

Many bachelor’s programs in cybersecurity culminate in a capstone or senior-year project. This will usually have a significant research component. There are scores of examples out there, but the trick is finding a topic that will prepare you for the job market.

Start talking to your BS professors as soon as you’ve established where your passions lie. Preparation is nine-tenths of the game:

  • Can you partner with a prestigious company or organization that’s attached to the university’s cybersecurity center?
  • What real-world projects would be appropriate for an entry-level security analyst to tackle?
  • If you are working with a team of students, what role do you wish to assume?

AI’s Role in Cybersecurity: A Key Differentiator for 2025

The Effects of AI on Cybersecurity Jobs

There’s no question that AI is going to have an impact on your undergraduate education in cybersecurity. In a recent ISC2 Survey of 1,123 members in security roles, AI in Cyber 2024: Is the Cybersecurity Profession Ready?, 56% of respondents suggested that AI will make some parts of their job obsolete.

The effects of AI on cybersecurity will be particularly noticeable for those in their early career. In that same year, Gartner unveiled its Top Eight Cybersecurity Predictions for 2024, predicting that, by 2028, “the adoption of GenAI will collapse the skills gap, removing the need for specialized education from 50% of entry-level cybersecurity positions.”

Mike Elgan came to a similar conclusion for SecurityIntelligence in his 2024 piece on Is AI saving jobs… or taking them?: “On a basic level, AI is becoming more proficient at automating routine tasks, such as log review and analysis, initial threat detection, vulnerability scanning and basic incident triage.” Many day-to-day routines are disappearing.

Tip: Have a look at this 2024 article by the Wiz Experts Team, Will AI Replace Cybersecurity? Exploring AI’s Evolving Role in Security to view a list of current applications of AI in cybersecurity and where automation is taking over from humans.

The Rise of AI-Related Cybersecurity Jobs

The arrival of artificial intelligence doesn’t mean that cybersecurity professionals have gone the way of the dodo. Instead, AI has accelerated the arms race between criminals who are using it to increase attacks and cybersecurity experts who are using it to deploy countermeasures. Unique job roles are emerging that require strategic, interdisciplinary skills.

For example:

  • In a 2024 opinion piece for StationX, Will AI Replace Cyber Security Jobs? The new Cyber Future, Adam Goss suggested that the arrival of new technologies would “lead to new types of cyber security jobs, such as AI security analysts or machine learning security engineers.”
  • Mike Elgan of SecurityIntelligence would append titles like AI cybersecurity specialists and cybersecurity data scientists to this list.

In the future, cybersecurity professionals should consider adding expertise in AI & ML, analytics, data science, and data governance to their existing security skill sets. According to Sam Hector, Senior Strategy Leader at IBM Security: “It may be that a high-level architectural expertise will become more valuable than a low-level knowledge of programs, code and scripting.”

Tip: For more ideas on where to focus your educational efforts, check out this helpful list from Team DigitalDefynd on What Cyber Security Jobs Are Safe from AI and Automation? [2025] to establish which cybersecurity roles will still require a human touch.

Which Schools Are Incorporating AI into their Cybersecurity Curricula?

Universities are constantly adjusting to new developments in AI and cybersecurity. But things are happening so quickly that it can be difficult for schools to know where to focus their efforts. For example:

  • The New England Institute of Technology is one of the few online bachelor’s in cybersecurity programs where we spotted a core course in AI—a 200-level course called Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.
  • However, we know from alumni that AI is already being woven into the curriculum for cybersecurity courses at Old Dominion University. At UMGC, part of the capstone has involved writing a paper on the uses of AI in cybersecurity.
  • In addition, many universities allow students to choose AI-related and data science electives.

Our advice is to look for schools that are actively investing in AI & cybersecurity research and supporting cybersecurity professors who are investigating AI applications. For instance, UTSA is launching a College of AI, Cyber, and Computing in 2025 that aims to marry expertise in AI, cybersecurity, data science, and other relevant fields. Norwich University also has an AI Center that works closely with its cybersecurity group.

Possibly. SANS Technology Institute is a private, for-profit company that offers a popular Bachelor’s in Applied Cybersecurity (BACS). This two-year, online degree completion program includes a field experience and portfolio practicum, and will prepare you for 9 GIAC certifications.

  • SANS holds a CAE-CD designation for the CAE-validated MS in Information Security Engineering, so it’s not an academic slouch. It also accepts the GI Bill.
  • Some alumni rate it highly, but they also mention the high cost. You may find cheaper options from a regionally accredited university within your state or online.

Other well-known for-profit options with CAE-CD designations include Capella University and American Public University.

What Does NCAE-C Stand For?

NCAE-C stands for the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) program. This program is managed by the NSA’s National Cryptologic School, in partnership with other federal agencies (e.g. USCYBERCOM).

What Are CAE Designations?

The NCAE-C program has established rigorous standards for cybersecurity education & academic excellence. It awards CAE designations to specific cybersecurity degrees & certificates in three categories:

  • CAE-CD (Cyber Defense): This is the most common designation. It’s awarded to strong cybersecurity degrees and/or certificates at the associate, bachelor’s and graduate levels that are offered by regionally accredited academic institutions.
  • CAE-CO (Cyber Operations): This is the hardest designation to earn. It’s awarded to technical, interdisciplinary, higher education programs that are firmly grounded in computer science, computer engineering, and/or electrical engineering disciplines. Programs must provide extensive opportunities for hands-on applications (via labs and exercises) and focus on both offensive & defensive cyber operations.
  • CAE-R (Research): This is given to Department of Defense (DoD) schools, PhD-producing military academies, and regionally accredited, degree granting four-year institutions rated by the Carnegie Classification as having highest, higher or moderate research activity.
What’s a CAE-Validated Program?

CAE-validated programs of study are specific programs that have met the academic requirements & cybersecurity standards established by the NCAE-C program. If you explore the profiles in the CAE Institution Map, you’ll notice that only certain degrees and certificates are listed as being CAE-validated.

Tip: Some online BS in cybersecurity programs in our rankings are CAE-validated; some are not. If you feel that the online degree is not going to be rigorous enough for your needs, we’ve provided a link to the CAE-validated on-campus alternative.
What Are the Most Important Skills to Learn in a Cybersecurity Degree?

The most important skills to learn in a cybersecurity degree will depend on the roles that you’re eyeing, as well as AI developments. The security skills that are in-demand today may be obsolete in two years.

With that caution in mind, here are a few skill sets that entry-level cybersecurity professionals may currently be expected to have:

  • Networking Fundamentals: Including a thorough knowledge of network administration & systems administration
  • Operating Systems: Including proficiency in Windows, Linux, and Unix systems
  • Scripting and Programming Skills: Including proficiency in Python and PowerShell
  • Network Security: Including an understanding of firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems
  • Technical Proficiency with Security Tools: Including tools like Splunk, Snort, Wireshark, and many more
  • Soft Skills: Including communication, strategic thinking, analytical, and program-solving skills
Tip: Pick 3-5 cybersecurity roles that you aspire to and reverse engineer your search. Ask AI to scan all the current job listings for those roles and list the required skill sets that employers are demanding. Then see if the curriculum for your BS matches up.
What Cybersecurity Certifications Should I Pursue?

Some of the most common certifications for entry-level cybersecurity professionals are offered by CompTIA, including:

  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Linux+
  • CompTIA Networking+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • CompTIA CySA+

Many cybersecurity professionals also end up pursuing higher-level certifications such as:

  • CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) from ISC2
  • CISA (Certified Information System Auditor) from ISACA
  • CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) from EC-Council
  • GIAC Security Certifications

See Cyberseek’s Cybersecurity Supply/Demand Heat Map for an up-to-date list of the most requested certifications for cyber job openings. CISSP, Security+, and CISA usually appear in the top 3.

It’s important to prioritize the most relevant ones. As one student noted in their review of WGU’s program and its certification preparation:

“Some of the certs are really useless, you won’t see too many job postings looking for Linux Essentials, PenTest+, CYSA, SSCP, CCSP. Vendor specific certs from Splunk, Cisco, AWS, and Azure are way more in demand or the CEH.”

Always check current job descriptions to see what’s truly required for your preferred job role. And remember that certifications are only one part of the puzzle. There are plenty of over-qualified, over-certified professionals out there who are finding it hard to secure a position.

What Jobs are Open to Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity Degree Graduates?

Here is a list of common job titles for entry-level cybersecurity roles. Many employers will also be looking for a certain number of years of work experience and relevant industry certifications:

  • Cybersecurity Analyst
  • Cybersecurity Specialist (Apprentice)
  • Security Analyst
  • Information Security Engineer/Analyst
  • Junior SOC Analyst
  • Entry-Level Penetration Tester (Ethical Hacking)
  • Entry-Level Cybersecurity Engineer
What If I Can’t Find a Job in Cybersecurity?

In a challenging job market, cybersecurity graduates also end up applying for IT support, system administrator & help desk positions. According to one academic:

“Most of the graduates from our cybersecurity BSc program (a heavy technical one) are currently employed in various roles spanning from IT admins to instructors and anything in between. About 30% stick with SOC analyst roles or roles like security engineer. I’ve seen some also taking roles as IAM admins and even consultants, compliance and auditing. Also, some have had classified jobs with Uncle Sam.”

Tip: You have the option to start in a relevant IT position and use that time to earn an online cybersecurity master’s degree, accrue work experience, and improve your hiring chances. That’s why we’ve highlighted accelerated master’s degree pathways in our rankings. You can also browse the cheapest online Master’s in Cybersecurity programs if you need to continue your education on a budget.
What is the Average Salary for Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity Graduates?

One of the most reliable sources for cybersecurity salary data is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and its Occupational Employment & Wages maps for Information and Security Analysts. Here is their most recent wages table:

Percentile 10% 25% 50% 75% 90%
