Why Earn an Online Bachelor’s Degree in Cybersecurity?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is predicting a 29% growth in jobs for Information Security Analysts from 2024-2034, much faster than the national average. According to ISC2 survey respondents, AI has caused a substantial increase in cyber threats and is rapidly changing the scope & nature of cybersecurity tasks. Now more than ever, trained professionals are needed to protect the world from harm.

But it pays to do your homework before you earn an academic qualification. Cybersecurity is an intensely competitive field and most employers are looking for candidates with prior work experience. Although ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Studies indicate that there is an ongoing workforce gap in cybersecurity positions, budget cuts, automation, and layoffs are severely affecting job prospects for entry-level cybersecurity professionals.

That’s why our rankings focus so strongly on bachelor’s degrees in cybersecurity with elements such as internships, cooperative experiences, and industry partnerships. A strong online undergraduate program with a CAE designation will help you accrue workplace experience and valuable career connections before you graduate.

Core Elements of an Online Cybersecurity Bachelor’s Degree

Admissions Process

Baseline Requirements

Universities are usually happy to accept a wide range of candidates into a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. In fact, many bachelor’s degrees in cybersecurity are designed for working professionals, continuing education students, and military servicemembers.

Generally speaking, schools will be looking for:

  • Educational Background: High school diploma or the equivalent (GED). Degree completion programs may ask for proof of an associate degree or equivalent credits & experience.
  • GPA: Each school will have a different minimum threshold. It can range from 2.0 to 3.0 or more.
  • Standardized Test Scores: Some universities will ask for SAT or ACT scores; some make these tests optional.
  • Prerequisite Coursework: Candidates will usually be expected to provide proof of high school courses in mathematics (e.g. Calculus), science (e.g. Physics), computer science fundamentals, English, and social sciences.

Some undergraduate cybersecurity degree programs will also request to see letters of recommendation, a personal statement or essay, and your résumé. Non-native English speakers will usually be expected to submit proof of language proficiency through test scores (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS).

Credit Transfers

If you have any previous experience, find out if you qualify for credit transfers. You may be able to transfer a large number of credits into your BS in Cybersecurity for a wide variety of reasons. These may include:

  • Previous College-Level Coursework
  • Professional Certifications
  • Military Education & Experience
  • Standardized Exams
  • Workplace Learning
  • Google Certificates
  • Vocational & Technical Training

Common Course Requirements

Core Coursework

Core courses for a BS in Cybersecurity will often be split between fundamental concepts in computing & networks and security-specific topics. In the first few years, you will be tackling courses such as:

  • Programming
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Operating Systems
  • Networks
  • System Administration
  • Linux Fundamentals

Once you’ve mastered skills in computing & networks, you can start to address how to protect them, with courses in areas such as:

  • Network Security
  • Operating System Security
  • Cloud Computing Security
  • Mobile Security
  • AI & Security
  • Intrusion Detection & Incident Response
  • Ethical Hacking & Penetration Testing
  • Digital Forensics
  • Introduction to Cryptography
  • Cybersecurity Policies & Ethics

Each BS degree will have its own unique slant, so we recommend examining the curriculum links carefully before you make a decision.

Concentrations

A number of universities also offer BS concentrations in cybersecurity specialty areas. Examples of undergraduate cybersecurity concentrations or tracks could include:

  • AI for Cybersecurity
  • Network Defense
  • Digital Forensics
  • Information Assurance
  • Cyber Operations
  • Cloud Security
  • IT Management

This is just a sample of what’s out there—there will be many more options.

Tip: Keep in mind that some BS in Cybersecurity degrees will allow you to customize your plan of study with a lot of cyber electives. In this way, you can create your own concentration.

What to Look For in Coursework

Even if universities are offering the same cybersecurity courses, they may not be delivering them in the same way. It’s important to establish whether you’d like to acquire fundamental theoretical knowledge in your classes or you’d really like to focus on hands-on applications.

For instance, one SNHU alumnus has noted that the CAE-validated Online Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity leans toward theory and away from offensive skills:

“All of the theory is applicable and some of the labs are handy. Please note this is cybersecurity, if you are looking for hands on network administration, server administration, hacking or penetration etc – really anything that isn’t theory – this is not the degree path for you.”

Always talk to recent BS alumni to get a sense of whether the core coursework has proved applicable to the workplace.

Tip: We particularly favor universities that provide a full list of software, technical platforms, and programming languages that are included in the curriculum.

Program Structure & Activities

Hands-On Labs

The best bachelor’s programs in cybersecurity balance training in fundamental theoretical concepts with hands-on experiences in labs and security simulations. Universities like to boast about hands-on training, so you will need to ask around to decide how serious they are.

You can supplement any gaps in your skill sets by training on outside platforms such as TryHackMe, but that will be an extra level of commitment. Talk to alumni and ask if you can monitor a lab before you commit to the degree.

Certification Preparation

Look for schools that embed preparation for cybersecurity certifications into the curriculum. WGU is the most famous example—the CAE-validated Online Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance includes prep for 16 industry certifications within the plan of study. But there are plenty more (e.g. NEIT). Before you apply, ask the program coordinator for a list of certifications that BS students commonly earn.

Internships

Recent high school graduates should prioritize bachelor’s programs in cybersecurity that include internship opportunities with well-known companies. Although a self-paced program like WGU may be popular with working professionals, it won’t help as much with career networking. As one alumnus noted:

“The real advantages I’ve seen from the UTSA BBA vs WGU are the local internship opportunities. I’ve seen a large number of folks finishing the BBA, getting an internship at my company, then being hired full time. My WGU post-placement experience was the “Handshake” program, where I was relentlessly pursued for helpdesk-type roles.”

In our rankings, we’ve noted which undergraduate programs have mandatory internships embedded in the curriculum. However, universities like UTSA also offer internships through their cybersecurity research & education centers. For example, UMGC’s Center for Security Studies has developed training and internship opportunities for undergraduates.

Co-Op Experiences

Co-operative education combines classroom-based training with practical work experience. For a stellar example of an undergraduate degree in cybersecurity that features co-ops, have a look at the University of Cincinnati’s CAE-validated Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity.

Beginning in the second year, students in the BS program are required to alternate semesters of classroom instruction with semesters of full-time, paid work in the IT industry. By the time they graduate, cybersecurity students at UC have the equivalent of 1+ years of professional experience.

Cyber Clubs & Competitions

When possible, get involved in the university’s cybersecurity clubs and put your hand up to participate in cyber competitions. For example, UMGC’s Cybersecurity Competition Team is composed of students, alumni, and faculty. The team trains in UMGC’s Virtual Security Lab and regularly participates in MAGIC CTF and Hack the Box.

You can also ask the program coordinator if the university is affiliated with any cyber organizations. For example, Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University have close ties to the Coastal Virginia Cybersecurity Student Association (CVCSA). The CVCSA hosts CyberForge, an annual conference and CTF event for students.

Capstone/Final Project

Many bachelor’s programs in cybersecurity culminate in a capstone or senior-year project. This will usually have a significant research component. There are scores of examples out there, but the trick is finding a topic that will prepare you for the job market.

Start talking to your BS professors as soon as you’ve established where your passions lie. Preparation is nine-tenths of the game:

  • Can you partner with a prestigious company or organization that’s attached to the university’s cybersecurity center?
  • What real-world projects would be appropriate for an entry-level security analyst to tackle?
  • If you are working with a team of students, what role do you wish to assume?

Methodology: How We Reviewed Online Cybersecurity Degrees

Blue Award Graphic for the Best Bachelor's in Cybersecurity AwardMastersInAI.org rankings of the best online undergraduate programs in cybersecurity are based on rigorous criteria measures. Our weighted algorthm factors in important quality markers such as accreditation, CAE designations, program reputation, and real-world outcomes. Here is how we crunched the data in 2026:

  • Accreditation: For our top 20 rankings of 4-year online undergraduate programs in cybersecurity and top 5 rankings of online degree completion programs in cybersecurity, we automatically excluded for-profit universities and schools with national accreditation. All of the universities in our rankings are regionally accredited.
  • CAE Designations & ABET Accreditation: To qualify for inclusion, schools in our undergraduate cyber rankings had to hold at least one CAE designation. Schools with ABET accreditation for cybersecurity received an extra point in our algorithm.
  • Program Focus: We decided to exclude any undergraduate program in cyber that did not have a strong technical core. That’s why degrees like Kent State University’s Online BS in Cybercriminology and Saint Louis University’s Online BS in Security and Strategic Intelligence did not make the cut this year.
  • Delivery Method: All online bachelor’s programs in cybersecurity had to be 100% online or with minimal campus visits.
  • Cyber Reputation: Our algorithm assigned additional points to universities that achieved high U.S. News & World Report rankings and CSRankings in cybersecurity and computer science.
  • Program Outcomes: To determine if the online bachelor’s program in cybersecurity achieved verifiable career results, we also factored in data on degree completion rates and average earnings at the 1-year and 4-year/5-year mark.

To give you the full picture, we have provided a list of key decision points within each profile, including a summary of cybersecurity skills that are covered in the curriculum. We have also indicated which programs are eligible for CyberCorps® SFS and Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Service Academy (CSA) scholarships.

Note: These rankings do not factor in tuition costs. If affordability is your top priority, check out our separate rankings of the Cheapest Online Cybersecurity Bachelor’s Degrees.

Key Findings for 2026

  • Aspiring cyber operations experts should prioritize schools with a CAE-CO designation. Three universities in our 2026 rankings hold all 3 CAE-designations, including CAE-CO—the University of Arizona, Old Dominion University, and Dakota State University. The University of Nebraska at Omaha holds CAE-CD and CAE-CO designations.
  • Cyber AI is growing in popularity for undergraduate study. Old Dominion University now offers a major in AI for Cybersecurity that’s CAE-validated for CyberAI. Other schools are including mandatory coursework in AI & security and tackling AI issues within their cybersecurity research centers.
  • More than half of the online bachelor’s degrees in our 2026 cybersecurity rankings include an internship and/or co-op experience as part of the curriculum. Internships can be a mandatory element or offered as an elective.

Who Should Earn an Online Bachelor’s Degree in Cybersecurity?

Job Pathways for Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity Degree Graduates

Here is a list of common job titles for entry-level cybersecurity roles. Many employers will also be looking for a certain number of years of work experience and relevant industry certifications:

  • Cybersecurity Analyst
  • Cybersecurity Specialist (Apprentice)

In a challenging job market, cybersecurity graduates also end up applying for IT support, system administrator & help desk positions. According to one academic:

“Most of the graduates from our cybersecurity BSc program (a heavy technical one) are currently employed in various roles spanning from IT admins to instructors and anything in between. About 30% stick with SOC analyst roles or roles like security engineer. I’ve seen some also taking roles as IAM admins and even consultants, compliance and auditing. Also, some have had classified jobs with Uncle Sam.”

Remember that you have the option to start in a relevant IT position and use that time to earn an online cybersecurity master’s degree, accrue work experience, and improve your hiring chances. That’s why we’ve highlighted accelerated master’s degree pathways in our rankings. You can also browse through our list of the cheapest online master’s in cybersecurity programs if you need to continue your education on a budget.

Average Salaries for Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity Graduates

One of the most reliable sources for cybersecurity salary data is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and its occupational profile of Information and Security Analysts. To give yourself the full picture, you can use AI to compare these figures with salary estimates on sites like Glassdoor.

In May 2024, these were the BLS’s national wage estimates for information and security analysts:

Percentile 10% 25% 50% 75% 90%
Hourly Wage $33.49 $44.31 $60.05 $76.73 $89.63
Annual Wage $69,660 $92,160 $124,910 $159,600 $186,420

It’s important to note that these are national averages. In 2024, the top 5 states with the highest mean wages for information security analysts were:

  • California
  • Idaho
  • Maryland
  • Washington
  • New Jersey

California is home to Silicon Valley; Maryland is a federal hotspot; and New Jersey is closely linked to NYC and its fintech sector. The spike in Idaho’s cybersecurity wages could be attributed to defense-related and federal cybersecurity projects in places like the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

In May 2024, top-paying metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas for information security analysts included:

  • San Jose
  • San Francisco
  • Boulder
  • Thousand Oaks-Ventura (LA)
  • Seattle

Keep in mind that all of these cities also have a massive stake in artificial intelligence & cyber AI. When you’re thinking about earning potential, think about the cost of living as well. San Francisco may pay well, but that’s partly to cover the sky-high rents.

What Are the Most Important Skills to Learn in an Online Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity?

The most important skills to learn in an undergraduate cybersecurity degree will depend on the roles that you’re eyeing, as well as AI developments. The security skills that are in-demand today may be obsolete in two years.

With that caution in mind, here are a few skill sets that entry-level cybersecurity professionals may currently be expected to have:

  • Networking Fundamentals: Including a thorough knowledge of network administration & systems administration
  • Operating Systems: Including proficiency in Windows, Linux, and Unix systems
  • Scripting and Programming Skills: Including proficiency in Python and PowerShell
  • Network Security: Including an understanding of firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems

  • Compliance, Risk & Governance: Including knowledge of risk assessment basics, NIST/CIS frameworks, and security policies & standards
  • Soft Skills: Including communication, technical writing, analytical thinking, and program-solving skills
Tip: Pick 3-5 cybersecurity roles that you aspire to and reverse engineer your search. Ask AI to scan all the current job listings for those roles and list the required skill sets that employers are demanding. Then see if the curriculum for your BS matches up.

AI’s Role in Cybersecurity: A Key Differentiator for 2026

The Effects of AI on Cybersecurity Jobs

There’s no question that AI is going to have an impact on your cybersecurity education and plans after graduation. Respondents to the 2025 ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study noted AI is now actively being deployed by cybersecurity teams for time-intensive tasks such as:

  • Network monitoring
  • Security operations & testing
  • Vulnerability management
  • Threat modeling
  • Endpoint protection & response

Most of these areas are ripe for automation.

The effects of AI on cybersecurity job responsibiities will be particularly noticeable for those in their early career. According to Gartner’s Top Eight Cybersecurity Predictions for 2024, by 2028, “the adoption of GenAI will collapse the skills gap, removing the need for specialized education from 50% of entry-level cybersecurity positions.”

The Rise of AI-Related Cybersecurity Jobs

But the arrival of artificial intelligence doesn’t mean that cybersecurity professionals have gone the way of the dodo. Instead, AI has accelerated the arms race between malevolents who are using artificial intelligence to increase attacks and cybersecurity experts who are using it to deploy countermeasures.

  • In a recent 2025 ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study, AI and cloud computing security were ranked #1 and #2 in the list of Top Security Team Skills Needs.
  • In a 2025 Cybersecurity Skills Gap report from Fortinet Training Institute, 48% of respondents reported that a lack of staff with sufficient AI expertise was the biggest challenge for IT decision-makers.

In response, unique cyber AI roles are emerging that require strategic, interdisciplinary skills. For example:

  • In a 2024 opinion piece for StationX, Will AI Replace Cyber Security Jobs? The new Cyber Future, Adam Goss suggested that the arrival of new technologies would “lead to new types of cyber security jobs, such as AI security analysts or machine learning security engineers.”
  • Mike Elgan of SecurityIntelligence would append titles like AI cybersecurity specialists and cybersecurity data scientists to this list.

This means emerging professionals should be developing expertise in AI & ML, analytics, data science, and data governance alongside their cybersecurity skills early in their career. The line between AI and cyber is growing increasingly blurred.

Tip: For more ideas on where to focus your educational efforts, check out this helpful list from Team DigitalDefynd on What Cyber Security Jobs Are Safe from AI and Automation? [2026] to establish which cybersecurity roles will still require a human touch.

Which Schools Are Incorporating AI into their Cybersecurity Curricula?

If you are serious about earning an undergraduate degree in cybersecurity, we highly recommend prioritizing universities that are staying on track of new developments in AI and cybersecurity.

  • In the past year, we have seen more and more schools introducing at least one course in AI & security to their curricula.
  • In addition, many undergraduate cybersecurity programs allow students to add AI, machine learning, and data science electives to their plan of study.
  • Old Dominion University’s Online BS in Cybersecurity even has a dedicated major in AI for Cybersecurity that has received a CyberAI validation from the NSA.

Course titles don’t tell the whole story! Most switched-on professors are already integrating AI training into preexisting courses. For instance, we know from alumni at UMGC that part of the capstone has involved writing a paper on the uses of AI in cybersecurity.

Look for schools that are actively investing in AI & cybersecurity research and supporting cybersecurity professors who are investigating AI applications. Highlights from our 2026 rankings include Penn State’s AI- and security-focused research labs; UTSA’s new College of AI, Cyber and Computing; and UND’s Artificial Intelligence Research (AIR) Center.

FAQ

What Bachelor’s Degree is Best for Cybersecurity?

Employers are usually willing to consider a number of undergraduate majors for entry-level cybersecurity positions. However, in addition to cybersecurity knowledge, they will expect candidates to have fundamental technical skills in computing, networking, and operating systems. They will also heavily favor job applicants with real-world experience and relevant certifications.

  • Recent High School Graduates: Before you commit to a four-year degree in cybersecurity, compare them to the alternative majors that we have listed below. Unless you’re being funded by your employer or a scholarship program like CyberCorps® SFS, you should consider a number of majors.
  • Working Professionals: If you are a working professional who is simply looking for an on-campus or online degree completion program that focuses solely on cybersecurity skills, there are plenty of options in our rankings and listings.

What Are Alternatives to a Bachelor’s Degree in Cybersecurity?

Popular alternatives to an undergraduate degree in cybersecurity include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS)
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT)
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS)
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCE)

You can customize any of these majors with a concentration and/or electives in cybersecurity (e.g. George Mason University’s on-campus, CAE-validated BSIT – Cyber Security).

Tip: Remember that you can pursue a double major in cybersecurity and a related discipline. You also have the option to earn an associate’s degree in IT or a related discipline before completing your bachelor’s in cybersecurity.

Should I Consider a For-Profit School Like SANS?

Possibly. SANS Technology Institute is a private, for-profit company that offers a popular Bachelor’s in Applied Cybersecurity (BACS). This two-year, online degree completion program includes a field experience and portfolio practicum, and will prepare you for 9 GIAC certifications.

  • SANS holds a CAE-CD designation for the CAE-validated MS in Information Security Engineering, so it’s not an academic slouch. It also accepts the GI Bill.
  • Some alumni rate it highly, but they also mention the high cost. You may find cheaper options from a regionally accredited university within your state or online.

Other well-known for-profit options with CAE-CD designations include Capella University and American Public University.

What Does NCAE-C Stand For?

NCAE-C stands for the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) program. This program is managed by the NSA’s National Cryptologic School, in partnership with other federal agencies (e.g. USCYBERCOM).

What Are CAE Designations?

The NCAE-C program has established rigorous standards for cybersecurity education & academic excellence. It awards CAE designations to specific cybersecurity degrees & certificates in three categories:

  • CAE-CD (Cyber Defense): This is the most common designation. It’s awarded to strong cybersecurity degrees and/or certificates at the associate, bachelor’s and graduate levels that are offered by regionally accredited academic institutions.
  • CAE-CO (Cyber Operations): This is the hardest designation to earn. It’s awarded to technical, interdisciplinary, higher education programs that are firmly grounded in computer science, computer engineering, and/or electrical engineering disciplines. Programs must provide extensive opportunities for hands-on applications (via labs and exercises) and focus on both offensive & defensive cyber operations.
  • CAE-R (Research): This is given to Department of Defense (DoD) schools, PhD-producing military academies, and regionally accredited, degree granting four-year institutions rated by the Carnegie Classification as having highest, higher or moderate research activity.

What is a CAE-Validated Program?

A CAE-validated program of study (POS) is a specific degree or academic program that has met the academic requirements & cybersecurity standards established by the NCAE-C program. If you explore the profiles in the CAE Institution Map, you’ll notice that only certain degrees and certificates are listed as being CAE-validated.

Tip: Some Online BS in Cybersecurity programs in our rankings are CAE-validated; some are not. If you feel that the online degree is not going to be rigorous enough for your needs, we’ve provided a link to the CAE-validated on-campus alternative.

What is a CyberAI-Validated Program?

In 2025, the NSA launched a new validation for programs of study called CyberAI. This recognizes programs that have demonstrated excellence in integrating AI training into their cybersecurity programs. In order to qualify for CyberAI validation, schools must already hold a current CAE Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) or a CAE Cyber Operations (CAE-CO) designation. CyberAI programs are judged on two separate criteria:

  • AICyber: Deploying AI to support traditional cybersecurity goals & enhance defense
  • SecureAI: Securing AI systems and infrastructure throughout their lifecycle

Old Dominion University was the first university in the USA to receive AICyber and SecureAI recognitions. Its Online Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity stands at #12 in our 2026 rankings. Other schools in our cybersecurity rankings, such as the University of Arizona, offer a separate online bachelor’s degree in AI that has been validated for CyberAI.

What Cybersecurity Certifications Should I Pursue?

Some of the most common certifications for entry-level cybersecurity professionals are offered by CompTIA, including:

  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Linux+
  • CompTIA Networking+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • CompTIA CySA+

Many cybersecurity professionals also end up pursuing higher-level certifications such as:

  • CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) from ISC2
  • CISA (Certified Information System Auditor) from ISACA
  • CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) from EC-Council
  • GIAC Security Certifications

See Cyberseek’s Cybersecurity Supply/Demand Heat Map for an up-to-date list of the most requested certifications for cyber job openings. Security+ and CISSP usually appear in the top 2.

It’s important to prioritize the most relevant ones. As one student noted in their review of WGU’s program and its certification preparation:

“Some of the certs are really useless, you won’t see too many job postings looking for Linux Essentials, PenTest+, CYSA, SSCP, CCSP. Vendor specific certs from Splunk, Cisco, AWS, and Azure are way more in demand or the CEH.”

Always check current job descriptions to see what’s truly required for your preferred job role. And remember that certifications are only one part of the puzzle. There are plenty of over-qualified, over-certified professionals out there who are finding it hard to secure a position.

How Much Does an Online Cybersecurity Degree Cost?

The cost of an online bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity can range from under $30,000 at a select few universities to $80,000+ at other schools. However, there are many ways to reduce the cost of your undergraduate education in cybersecurity, including:

  • In-state tuition at a university within your state
  • Cybersecurity scholarships
  • Federal & state grants
  • Credit transfers for certifications & prior learning
  • Military benefits & tuition discounts (often $250 per credit)
  • Powering through a competency-based program like WGU
  • Working while you study part-time

For comparison, we’ve created rankings of the Most Affordable Online Bachelor’s Degrees in Cybersecurity.
