When it comes to AI/ML programs, the Garden State’s doing great! With six master’s, four PhDs, and a whopping eight certification programs, students have plenty of options in a state known for high-caliber education.
Noted by Forbes for producing some of the nation’s highest-earning alumni, Stevens Institute of Technology offers half of Jersey’s artificial intelligence programs. You can view the rest—such as Princeton, Rutgers, and Seton Hall—using our state listings below.
New Jersey’s Active Artificial Intelligence Landscape
Across the State of New Jersey, government agencies and businesses are finding innovative ways to leverage AI.
- State leaders assembled a Task Force to help study the effects of AI and different technological advancements that are shaping the future of New Jersey’s economy and workforce.
- The Rutgers Center for State Health Policy launched the New Jersey Integrated Population Health Data Project (iPHD) to address the state’s population health issues, such as the opioid crisis, maternal and infant health, and viral infections like COVID-19. The project integrates data from publicly supported programs to study health issues that affect New Jersey.
- Middlesex County, through its Autonomous & Smart Mobility Initiative, created DataCity. This stretch of land provides a rigorous testing ground for autonomous vehicles and is the nation’s first smart mobility testing corridor. Using high-definition sensors, it collects massive amounts of driving data in real-world scenarios. Middlesex auto manufacturers leverage this data to recreate roadways in a controlled environment, which helps them in developing autonomous driving technology.
New Jersey is also doing great things for future graduates. South Jersey Industries partnered with the Mark Cuban Foundation and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs to host the introductory Artificial Intelligence Bootcamp, a program offered to high school students interested in AI technology.
Like other states, New Jersey is also having debates around AI. Under consideration is a bill that would examine the efficacy of autonomous hiring systems to prevent discrimination. The bill restricts companies from using AI hiring software unless they pass a “bias” test.
Artificial Intelligence Education in New Jersey
New Jersey universities offer opportunities for world-class education and research. Here are just a few.
The New Jersey Institute of Technology announced new graduate programs for artificial intelligence. You can apply for an MS in Artificial Intelligence, where you’ll learn how to solve complex problems using AI, machine learning, natural language processing, and image understanding. You can also take advantage of the Artificial Intelligence Graduate Certificate program. This immersive, two-semester program earns credits that can be applied to the graduate program as well.
At the NJIT, you can research multiple domains in artificial intelligence:
- Gene therapy and cell regeneration through bioscience and bioengineering research.
- Robotics and machine intelligence research, which studies the application of robotics in rehabilitation, manufacturing, navigation and transportation, and medical care.
- Advanced materials, including smart energetic and campsite materials, quantum materials, and biomaterials, used to develop technologies for environmental and pharmaceutical applications.
An MS in Computer Science at Rutgers University offers several categories of study, including an AI/Machine Learning track. This impressive program explores a wide range of disciplines like pattern recognition, machine learning, and brain-inspired computing, which teaches how human brain computation can be effectively modeled with AI.
The highly-esteemed Princeton University offers an impressive MSE in Computer Science. This program highlights the fundamentals and modern practices of machine learning, statistical computation, and natural language processing. Graduates can get the Statistics and Machine Learning Graduate Certificate, which is designed to add another layer of expertise to existing graduates.
The Stevens Institute of Technology created one of the first Applied Artificial Intelligence Master’s programs. At Stevens you can develop a background in the theoretical foundations of artificial intelligence, deep learning, and machine learning through a variety of engineering applications. You’ll also get hands-on experience with software and hardware skills, valuable across multiple engineering domains.
Montclair State University offers both a certificate and an M.S. in Computational Linguistics. This unique domain applies natural language processing to help create modern speech recognition, grammar checking, and dictionary tools.
