Artificial Intelligence Education in Ohio

Ohio might not be the first place you think of for artificial intelligence developments, but don’t overlook the Buckeye State. Columbus, the state’s capital, is preparing for the future by recruiting and embracing tech companies. In addition, Ohio universities like Kent State and the University of Cincinnati already offer master’s-level AI degree programs, with other schools launching graduate certificates in AI subfields like machine learning, deep learning, and automated vehicles, to name a few.

One of the state’s top AI master’s programs is Kent State University’s M.S. in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Created by the Computer Science Department, the degree prepares students for AI career paths in intelligent analytics, robotics, smart homes, automation, and more. Some of the required courses include Principles of Machine Learning, Internet of Things, Big Data Analytics, and Multimedia System and Biometrics. Students complete a total of 30 credits, which includes your choice of a capstone project, internship, or thesis.

Another unique program is the University of Cincinnati’s M.Eng in Robotics and Intelligent Autonomous Systems. The graduate degree is for students passionate about engineering and interested in learning more about autonomous devices (e.g., self-driving cars). Because it is an M.Eng degree rather than an M.S., the curriculum is different from other AI programs. The degree requires a mix of coursework designed around project management, interpersonal skills, and electives. All students must complete an engineering capstone project before graduation.

The state’s most notable university, Ohio State, does not currently offer an artificial intelligence master’s degree. With that said, Ohio State is a leader in AI research. In July 2021, the U.S. National Science Foundation chose the university to lead two of the foundation’s 11 federally-funded institutes dedicated to advancing AI research: The AI Institute for Intelligent Cyberinfrastructure and Computational Learning in the Environment (ICICLE) and the AI Institute for Future Edge Networks and Distributed Intelligence (AI-EDGE). Students interested in AI do have the option to pursue the university’s M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. The degree provides students with the foundational skills for OSU’s Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering – Automotive Systems and Mobility (Connected and Automated Vehicles).

The Artificial Intelligence Landscape in Ohio

Ohio stands to gain a lot from transitioning from traditional industries like steel and auto manufacturing towards tech. AI will significantly impact future job opportunities in Ohio, which is why the state has launched various initiatives to prepare itself for an AI-driven world. One example is the Ohio Educational Service Center Association’s (OESCA) partnership with the AI Education Project. The AI Education Project is a national nonprofit that piloted one of the nation’s first kindergarten-to-12th-grade AI curriculums. Thousands of students across the state are part of the project.

When it comes to the private sector, Ohio’s tech companies have been increasingly pulling in large amounts of funding. By October 2021, the state’s tech companies had received over $2 billion in venture capital investments. As more tech companies establish themselves in Ohio’s tech-driven cities like Columbus, the state’s workforce will undergo a major transition. Earning a Master’s in AI will prepare students for a long and exciting career in Ohio’s developing AI scene.
