What is an MBA in Artificial Intelligence?

An MBA in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a business degree that combines core coursework in corporate management & leadership with specialized training in AI technologies and strategies. It’s a cross-functional qualification that’s designed to help business leaders speak intelligently about AI to all of their colleagues, including computer engineers, data scientists, marketers, and C-suite executives.

  • AI in the Curriculum: In most MBA programs, artificial intelligence will be offered as a concentration or major within a traditional MBA curriculum. MBA in AI coursework often focuses on high-level management topics such as AI strategy & implementation, industry applications of artificial intelligence, AI product management & innovation, and ethical & legal concerns.
  • Technical Difficulty: The level of technical difficulty will vary from program to program. Some MBA in AI degrees are no-code or low-code programs designed for business professionals; others will be geared toward MBA candidates with technical & STEM backgrounds (e.g. engineers). Look for MBAs with a STEM designation if you’re prioritizing technical coursework.

To help you make an informed decision, we’ve created detailed rankings of the 21 Best Online MBA in AI programs and assembled a comprehensive directory of business-focused artificial intelligence degree programs (on-campus and online).

Key Findings for 2026

  • 89% of MBA in AI programs and master’s in AI & business degrees in our directory are offered in an online format. However, MBA in AI programs from these schools will frequently be available in hybrid and on-campus formats as well.
  • MBA in AI programs from Tier 1 Schools of Business such as Penn’s Wharton School and UChicago’s Booth School are available, but they are typically offered in an on-campus or hybrid format. The one exception is Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School, whose Online Hybrid MBA in AI in Business is #1 in our rankings.
  • East Coast and Midwest universities dominate our Best Online MBA in AI rankings. Four of the top 5 schools—including Carnegie Mellon—are located in the Mid-Atlantic region. If you live in this area and wish to network, you may want to consider applying for their hybrid programs instead.
  • 11 out of 21 online MBA in AI programs in our rankings are STEM-designated. That’s good news for U.S. students who are looking for virtual MBA programs that contain a solid dose of science, tech, engineering, and mathematics courses. International students on F-1 visas who are seeking an OPT extension should consider hybrid and on-campus alternatives.

Methodology: How We Evaluated Online MBA in AI Programs

Rankings Badge for Best Online Master's in AI Programs

These rankings of the Best Online MBA in AI Programs in the USA are driven by a weighted algorithm that focuses on business AI degrees that offer an exceptional Return on Investment (ROI). This algorithm is built on the following factors:

  • Academic Reputation: As a baseline, we only consider non-profit, regionally accredited universities with AACSB-accredited business schools. Our algorithm gives additional weight to universities with strong U.S. News & World Report rankings for computer science, AI, and MBA education.
  • Dedicated AI Focus: In order to be included in our Best Online MBA in AI rankings, MBA programs must offer a dedicated concentration or major in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or a closely related field. However, it’s worth noting that some general MBA programs will still offer AI electives (e.g. UNC Kenan-Flagler’s STEM-designated Online MBA).
  • Online Delivery Method: MBA in AI programs have to be 100% online or online with limited campus requirements in order to be included in our rankings. That’s why we’ve excluded strong hybrid MBA in AI offerings from prestigious schools like the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers. You’ll find these schools—as well as plenty of other hybrid and on-campus options—listed in our directory.
  • Career & Earnings Outcomes: Using data from well-respected sources like IPEDS, we assess program debt rates and alumni earnings after graduation (1 year and 4-5 years). This allows us to gauge the long-term value of the MBA in AI.

The best schools in our online MBA in AI rankings consistently excel across multiple categories. This explains why you’ll notice a lot of lesser known regional universities further down in the rankings. Even though their business schools can’t compete with the top 5 in prestige and name recognition, they tend to have low debt rates and a strong ROI.

Note: Do you live in the state where a degree is being offered (e.g. Maryland)? Many of the business schools in our online rankings also offer a full-time, on-campus MBA in AI.

Types of AI MBA Programs Available

Technically-Focused MBA in AI Programs

Technically focused MBA in AI programs would be classified as degrees that feature a lot of practical classes in artificial intelligence and machine learning. In many cases, these technical courses have been developed by the Department of Computer Science or Electrical & Computer Engineering. Look for coursework that includes hands-on training in popular AI & machine learning tools, as well as Python.

It’s worth asking the MBA program coordinator who helped to design the AI curriculum. Strong technical MBA in AI degrees tend to draw on the expertise of their computer science departments and AI labs. For instance, the University of Cincinnati’s Online MBA in Artificial Intelligence in Business includes a six-course graduate certificate in AI in Business that was developed by the Lindner College of Business’s Applied AI Lab.

Non-Technical MBA in AI Programs

Non-technical MBA in AI programs would be categorized as MBA programs that provide students with a strategic understanding of how AI and machine learning are being deployed in business settings. However, they will not focus on training in technical skill sets. For example, Villanova’s Online Professional MBA in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is deliberately designed as a no-code/low-code program.

If you’re leaning toward an MBA program, but you’re worried it doesn’t have enough technical coursework for your needs, you have alternative options. You could add an AI graduate certificate to your plan of study. You could consider a dual degree program that marries an MBA with a STEM-designated master’s degree in a major like business analytics or data science. Or you could forgo the MBA and opt for an MS in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI) or MEng in AI that has a business flavor.

Industry-Specific MBA in AI Programs

Industry-specific MBA in AI programs can be defined as degrees that focus on AI applications & developments in a specific field. A classic example is Suffolk University’s STEM-designated Online MBA in Artificial Intelligence in Marketing Strategy & Practice. The AI concentration is completely focused on how artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced analytics can be used to solved marketing challenges.

You don’t have to opt for an industry-specific program in order to focus on your realm of expertise. Many MBA in AI degrees will allow you to customize the curriculum with relevant electives (e.g. AI in healthcare) and dual concentrations (e.g. AI + Healthcare Management). Pay close attention to the university’s location. Schools of Business will have strong ties to local sectors (e.g. NYC schools & finance; DC schools & government; Boston schools & healthcare; Midwest schools & agriculture, etc.).

Dual MBA/MS in AI Programs

Dual MBA/MS in AI programs allow you to combine a business-focused MBA with a technical master’s degree in artificial intelligence. Examples include American University’s Online MBA/MS in Business Analytics & Artificial Intelligence and Stevens Institute of Technology’s Online Dual MBA & ME/MS in Applied Artificial Intelligence. SIT even gives MBA students a choice between a professional Master of Engineering (ME) or a research-focused Master of Science (MS).

Talk to your mentors and make sure you have clear job goals in mind before committing to a dual degree program. Although an MBA/MS in AI may have a shorter time-frame and be less expensive than two separate degrees, it’s still a significant commitment. If you’re in the early stages of your career, you may be better off opting for a technical master’s degree, finding gainful employment, and then asking your employer to help subsidize your MBA.

How to Evaluate a School’s MBA in AI Program

School of Business

The best MBA in AI programs come from the best business schools. Although many MBA students make it their mission to get into one of the top 20 schools in the country (Tier 1), rankings aren’t the only indication of quality. When you are evaluating MBA in AI programs, pay special attention to the following:

  • AACSB Accreditation: This prestigious accreditation is granted to only 6% of business schools offering business degrees worldwide.
  • AI Research Centers & Labs: AI and machine learning labs in business schools should be focused on practical business applications, rather than pure AI theory & research.
  • Business Faculty with AI Research Interests: Faculty profiles are often listed on the MBA program website. Find out if any of your business professors head up their own AI labs or currently work for major tech companies.
  • Industry Partnerships: Top business schools will give MBA in AI students plenty of opportunities to work on capstone & consulting projects with tech companies and AI startups.
  • AI Strengths in Specific Sectors: Business schools typically have tight connections to local industries & sectors (e.g. healthcare, finance, cybersecurity, manufacturing, etc.). How are schools currently deploying AI in those areas?

Admissions Requirements & Class Profile

Admissions requirements will tell you if you meet the minimum threshold for MBA consideration. We’ve included admissions links in our program directory to help you make a quick decision. However, MBA class profiles will give you a much better sense of whether you’d be a good fit for the program.

An MBA class profile is an annual snapshot of the program’s cohort. It highlights data points like undergraduate majors, average GPA, average GMAT scores, average years of work experience, current job roles, and typical industries/sectors. But it will also track demographic info such as countries represented, percentage of international students, gender split, average age, class size, and minority representation. If you can’t find one on the MBA website, ask the program coordinator for a sample.

Note: Business schools value diversity, so don’t be discouraged if you are in an underrepresented group for an MBA in AI. As long as you’re meeting the academic benchmarks, you’re welcome to apply.

AI in Business Curriculum

MBA in AI programs are split into two distinct parts:

  1. MBA Business Core: All MBA in AI programs contain a core of foundational coursework in high-level business topics. Courses will typically cover areas such as corporate finance, accounting, business statistics, marketing, strategy, economics, operations management, and leadership. In a two-year MBA program, most of these courses are tackled in the first year. A number of MBA students find quantitative-heavy classes in corporate finance, business statistics, and financial accounting to be the most challenging.
  2. Artificial Intelligence Concentration: Once you have completed some foundational credits, you can start focusing on the AI concentration. There are many different titles for this concentration—AI, AI in Business, Applied AI in Business, AI & Business Strategy—but the real differences lie in the coursework. Some AI concentrations contain three courses that skim the surface of AI applications in business. Other concentrations will go into a lot of technical depth. A standard AI in Business concentration might feature work in applied AI for business, machine learning (ML), business analytics, Python, industry applications of AI, strategic AI, and AI & ethics. Have a look at Bentley’s Online STEM MBA in AI for a good example.

Course descriptions are usually provided in the curriculum section of the MBA website—see our program directory for direct links. If you’re unable to find course descriptions on the website, search for the MBA in the university’s most recent Academic Catalog. You can also look up the bios of faculty members who are teaching the AI courses to ensure they have technical credibility.

Capstone/Final Project

MBA in AI programs frequently contain a final project called a capstone. An MBA capstone is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing you to apply everything you have learned in the MBA program to real-world business challenges. For example, you might be expected to deploy advanced AI and machine learning tools to solve a specific business problem for a client (e.g. customer churn in the retail sector).

An MBA in AI capstone can take many forms, including a:

  • Consulting Project
  • Simulated Business Experience
  • Management Game
  • Business Analytics Practicum
  • Global Business Practicum
  • Independent Research Project
  • Master’s Thesis

Before committing to a school, ask the MBA in AI program coordinator for a list of recent capstone projects (e.g. title & executive summary) and examples of deliverables (e.g. AI or machine learning models, analytics dashboards, ROI analyses, strategic recommendations, etc.). This is yet another quick way to understand if the program will be a good fit for your technical expertise and career goals.

Networking Elements

Unlike MS in AI degrees, MBA in AI programs almost always include a healthy dose of networking opportunities. Business schools understand that most of the value of the degree is based on career connections. Examples of networking elements in an MBA in AI include:

  • International Residencies
  • Professional Development Workshops
  • Corporate Site Visits & Tours
  • Industry Immersions
  • Case Competitions & Hackathons
  • Entrepreneurial Experiences
  • Leadership Development Expeditions
  • Management Conferences
  • Summer Internships

On-campus, full-time MBA in AI degrees will have the most networking elements—these are programs where you will see your academic colleagues on a daily basis and take part in business school events. However, the best hybrid & online MBA in AI programs also make an effort to engage students on a personal level. In our rankings, we’ve flagged these programs as being strong picks for “career networking.”

Are you leaning toward an online MBA in AI that is weak on networking elements? Remember that you can create your own opportunities! For example, the University of Delaware’s Online MBA in Artificial Intelligence contains no residency components. But it will give you access to a variety of MBA career services, including executive mentoring, and a valid reason to reach out to the university’s AI and FinTech institutes to talk about potential collaborations. Take every advantage of the university’s resources once you are enrolled.

Delivery Method

MBA in AI programs are offered in three delivery methods:

  • On-Campus: Classes are held on a regular basis during daytime hours at the School of Business. On-campus MBA students often end up staying in graduate accommodation.
  • Hybrid: Classes are a mix of 100% online courses and on-campus courses that are frequently scheduled in the evening and/or on weekends in order to accommodate working professionals.
  • Online: Classes are delivered in an asynchronous, “learn on your on time” format and/or a synchronous, real-time format that requires you to attend virtual sessions, lectures, and discussions at certain times. Optional or mandatory in-person experiences may also be included.

If you are interested in an online or hybrid program, it’s important to understand when you will be required to be physically or virtually present for classes and plan your schedule accordingly. 100% asynchronous online MBA in AI programs do exist, but they don’t provide much in the way of career connections.

Career Services

At the best business schools, MBA in AI students have access to an extensive number of personalized career services. At the worst business schools, career services will consist of generic online guides and quizzes. You will need to do some investigating to find out what’s on offer and whether recent MBA alumni were happy with their job hunt. Look for elements such as:

  • 1:1 Career Coaching w/ Tech Advisors
  • Executive Mentoring
  • Recruitment Events with Top Tech Firms
  • Mock Interviews
  • Alumni Introductions & Matching
  • In-Depth Workshops
  • Rigorous Résumé Reviews
  • Employer Showcases & Panels
  • Tech-Focused Career Fairs
  • Company Site Visits

If you are an online or hybrid MBA in AI student, you may not have access to the same career services as full-time, on-campus students. That means you may have to be more proactive in forging connections and finding your own mentors. It can be done, but it will require time and energy.

Salary Figures & Job Titles

One of the easiest ways to assess an MBA in AI program is to evaluate the salary figures and job titles of recent alumni.

  • Salary Figures: Strong business schools often make a point of citing the average or mean salary of MBA graduates. However, they don’t always track specific salary data for students in the AI concentration. So you should take their numbers with a grain of salt—tech-oriented business roles may pay more than roles in sectors like marketing or healthcare. Whenever we could find them, we’ve included salary figures in our rankings profiles.
  • Job Titles: There are a number of potential job titles for MBA in AI graduates; almost all of them will involve leadership and management. Since some MBA in AI programs are more technically focused than others, it’s worth asking MBA program coordinator for a list of recent alumni and their job titles. This can help you evaluate the usefulness of the curriculum for your career goals.

Paying for an MBA in AI

MBA in AI students usually end up drawing on a variety of sources in order to cover the cost of their degree. Some rely heavily on work income and loans; others are fortunate enough to secure fellowships. Here are some of the most common ways to pay for an MBA in AI.

  • Employer Sponsorship & Tuition Assistance: In the USA, some companies offer tuition reimbursement programs/employer education benefits up to a limit of $5,250 per employee per year. Others might provide conditional sponsorship in return for your commitment to remain at the company for a set period of time. Many working professionals opt for a part-time plan of study in order to stretch out these kinds of employer contributions.
  • University Scholarships & Fellowships: Talk to the MBA program coordinator about how to apply for internal awards. A number of MBA programs offer fellowships, scholarships, or partial sponsorships. Full-time, on-campus MBA programs tend to have a lot of these awards. There will be fewer scholarships & fellowship opportunities for 100% online MBA programs.
  • External Scholarships, Fellowships & Partnerships: Strong MBA programs will point you toward external funding opportunities. Some universities even have special MBA partnerships with foundations. For examples, check out the Reaching Out MBA (Romba) Fellowship for LGBTQ+ students and the Forté Fellowship for women candidates.
  • Personal Savings & Work Income: MBA students often rely on personal savings and work income to help them through the degree. Be sure to talk to your employer about your plans. If you opt for a part-time online MBA program in AI, you may be able to negotiate a pay rise/promotion each year for meeting specific career goals & educational benchmarks.
  • Student Loans: If you don’t have enough in savings & work income, you will probably need to consider federal student loans and private loans. Some MBA students have also negotiated interest-free student loans with family members. It goes without saying that you will need to do a thorough cost-analysis on your post-graduation earnings to learn how long it will take you to get out of debt.

How to Determine the ROI of an MBA in AI

1. Calculate the Total Cost

An MBA in AI is going to be a significant investment of your time and money. With advances in artificial intelligence moving so quickly, you will need to be sure that your qualification is going to see dividends. In order to quickly determine whether the ROI justifies the cost, you can use the following calculation.

First create a list of the following costs:

  • Total Tuition & Fees
  • Books & Materials
  • Living Expenses (if studying full-time)
  • Lost Income (if studying full-time)

Add all of these figures together. This number is the total cost of your MBA degree. For this example, let’s say it’s $120,000.

Note: If you are studying online and continuing to work full-time, you may not need to factor in living expenses or lost income.

2. Calculate Your Annual Salary Gain

Now you will need to determine how much you will gain in salary in the year after graduation. Using your current salary and the confirmed or estimated salary for your dream job (see the table above), list these two figures:

  • Projected Post-MBA Salary (e.g. $110,000)
  • Current Pre-MBA Salary (e.g. $60,000)

Subtract your current Pre-MBA Salary from your projected Post-MBA Salary. The difference is your annual salary gain (e.g. $110,000 – $60,000 = $40,000).

3. Estimate the Return on Investment (ROI)

Now take your annual salary gain (e.g. $40,000), divide it by the total cost of the MBA (e.g. $120,000), and multiply that number by 100 to determine the percentage. In this case, $40,000 / $120,000 x 100 = 33.3%. Anywhere between 25% and 50% in the first few years after graduation is considered a decent return on investment. The higher your percentage, the faster the payback.

Additional Considerations on ROI

Everyone who is thinking about earning an MBA in AI has to decide whether they want to pay over $100k for a full-time, on-campus program from a top-tier business school or opt for a more affordable online program with fewer career connections & networking elements. There’s no easy answer to this question. In general, an online MBA program is not going to have the prestige factor or industry leverage of an on-campus program. However, it may be the perfect solution if you are trying to avoid student debt!

For example, the total tuition for University of Southern Indiana’s Online MBA in Artificial Intelligence was under $14k in 2026. Even if you can’t rely on fellowships, work income, employer tuition reimbursement, or even personal savings to help cover the cost, you’re probably still going to make back your investment within 1-2 years of graduation. So it really pays to have the ROI conversation with your employer and your career mentors. They may suggest you go for a lower-price MBA and offer a secure promotion & pay rise in return.

MBA in AI FAQ

Who is the Ideal Candidate for an MBA in AI?

The ideal candidates for an MBA in AI would be:

  • Mid-career professionals in business, marketing, or operations who wish to pivot into tech-savvy leadership roles
  • Tech professionals who are looking to move into executive roles
  • Business analysts or data-savvy managers who are seeking to upskill
  • Product managers and consultants who aim to specialize in AI-driven solutions
  • Entrepreneurs who are focused on building AI-enabled startups

Do Tier 1 Business Schools Offer an MBA in AI?

Tier 1 Schools of Business in the USA do offer MBA in AI programs. A Tier 1 school is usually defined as a business school that consistently appears in the top 20 of national rankings (e.g. U.S. News & World Report, Fortune, Bloomberg Businessweek, etc.) and the top 50 of international rankings (e.g. Financial Times, QS Global MBA Rankings, etc.).

A number of Tier 1 business schools in our directory offer MBA concentrations or specializations in artificial intelligence, including Penn, UChicago, Northwestern, and the University of Virginia. In most cases, these MBA programs are either hybrid or on-campus. An exception is Carnegie Mellon University, which offers an STEM-designated Online Hybrid MBA in AI in Business that’s primarily online.

Do I Need to Earn an MBA in AI from a Tier 1 Business School?

Tier 1 Schools: If you are aiming for leadership positions with a prestigious tech company (e.g. Google, Amazon, Meta, etc.) or elite consulting & venture capital roles (e.g. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, etc.), then an MBA in AI from a Tier 1 school should be your priority. You’ll have access to cutting-edge AI research & labs, extensive career & recruiting services, and a strong alumni network. And you’ll have opportunities to work on industry-focused capstones.

Tier 2 & 3 Schools: An MBA in AI from a Tier 2 or Tier 3 school may be perfectly acceptable if you are aiming for a promotion or pay rise within your current job; seeking to improve your technical and/or management knowledge; changing careers; or you are prioritizing schools that have a strong track record in your geographical region or industry (e.g. Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School and healthcare). These are what you might call “check the box” programs.

What is a STEM-Designated MBA? Does it Matter for Online MBA Programs?

A STEM-designated MBA is defined as one that meets the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s criteria for training in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. International students on an F-1 visa who complete an on-campus or hybrid STEM-designated program can apply for a 24-month extension to their Optional Training Period (OPT), on top of the standard 12-month period. Talk to the MBA program coordinator if this is your goal.

Online-only international students aren’t eligible for OPT, so a STEM designation won’t matter much for anyone living outside of the United States and completing a 100% online program. However, it may be an important quality marker for anyone living within the USA. It signals that an online MBA is strong on quantitative and technical skills, with the majority of coursework focusing on STEM subjects. We’ve flagged any program in our online rankings with a STEM designation.

How Much Does an MBA in AI Cost?

On-Campus: Full-time, on-campus MBA in AI programs at Tier 1 business schools like the University of Pennsylvania can cost more than $180k. Tuition at smaller, less prestigious schools like San Francisco Bay University might be under $20k (not including living expenses and materials).

Online: Tuition prices for AI-focused online MBA programs at well-known schools like the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University can cost around $90k-$110k. However, tuition for Carnegie Mellon’s Online Hybrid MBA was hovering around $50k in 2026. The cheapest online MBA in AI programs can cost under $15k (e.g. University of Southern Indiana).

Do I Have to Complete a Capstone Project for an MBA in AI?

You may not have to complete a capstone project in order to earn an MBA in AI. Programs like the University of Southern Indiana’s Online MBA in Artificial Intelligence are coursework-only. There is no thesis or capstone requirement. If you are seeking a “check the box” MBA and you don’t have the time—or inclination—to collaborate with a real-world industry partner on a business challenge, you may wish to forgo the capstone.

Keep in mind that some MBA in AI programs offer alternatives to the capstone. For example, Drexel University’s Part-Time Online MBA in Applied AI in Business includes an experiential requirement that can take the form of an internship, capstone, consulting project, international residency, and more. In Appalachian State University’s Online MBA in Artificial Intelligence, students can select an MBA internship, business practicum, or thesis for the final elective.
