Florida isn’t usually considered a leader in artificial intelligence, but it has been making outstanding progress in recent years! Gainesville: The home of UF is also coming on strong. According to a 2025 Brookings Metro report on Mapping the AI Economy, Gainesville saw AI job postings surge by more than 250% between 2018 to 2025. Thanks to the processing power of UF’s supercomputer, HiPerGator, and generative clinical LLM models like GatorTronGPT, Gainesville is particularly known for its work in the healthcare AI sector. Potential partners for these kinds of projects include UF Health and Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.
Orlando: According to a CompTIA report on the State of the Tech Workforce 2025, Orlando is booming. Between 2019 and 2024, tech employment in the region increased by 21%, roughly twice the growth rate of national tech employment (11%) during the same period. It’s a well-known center of aerospace & defense tech. More than $6 billion in modeling, training and simulation contracts is awarded annually to the region (think AI and digital twins). And—of course—it’s home to massive entertainment tech infrastructures.
Tampa: Named as a “rising star” for AI economies in the Brookings Metro Report, Tampa was also identified as a cybersecurity hub in eMerge Americas 2025 IH Insights Report. It’s significant that USF’s new Bellini College is the first named college in the country dedicated to AI and cybersecurity and plays host to the CyberBay Summit.

It’s intriguing that AI risktakers, climate tech enthusiasts, and venture capitalists are congregating around Miami, a city that’s at high risk for climate change disasters and extreme weather events. This is where you might see the most activity in AI-native firms & startups. “AI plus” startups are more likely to be found in places such as Orlando and Tampa, where AI experts are building on existing strengths in sectors such as defense, logistics, and aerospace.
