Methodology: How We Calculated Prices for the Cheapest Online Master’s in AI

Most Affordable Master's in Artificial Intelligence Award BadgeOur affordable rankings methodology is based on the total cost, including all mandatory fees. Here are the factors we used to determine the most affordable master’s in AI degrees under $20k in 2026, including a breakdown of our calculations:

  • Total Tuition: We start by collecting data on the credits required to graduate and the cost-per-credit rate for the online master’s in AI. For schools that charge tuition on a per semester basis, we use 5 semesters for programs that don’t specify a timeline (e.g. 6 credits per semester for a 30-credit program). We also include any mandatory online or technology fees in our calculations, which is why our estimate may be a little higher than the price quoted on the program website.
  • Tuition Type: At public universities, tuition rates can differ based on a student studying in-state versus out-of-state. In addition, some schools have a separate per credit tuition rate for online graduate students. To keep things fair, we always use the online student rate or out-of-state rate for our cost quotes. However, you may be able to find lower tuition rates for an online AI graduate program from a public university in your area. If this appeals to you, browse AI programs by state.
  • Online Status: To appear in our affordable rankings, AI graduate programs have to be 100% online or mostly online with minimal on-campus requirements. Keep in mind that a number of schools will offer exactly the same program in an alternative hybrid format. So folks who live close to the universities in our rankings may wish to consider a blended degree with some visits to campus.
  • Program Focus: We only consider online graduate programs in artificial intelligence or related degrees with AI and/or machine learning tracks. That means you’ll spot of number of affordable online Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) programs with an AI concentration in our rankings. We decided to exclude any niche degrees that do not have enough technical coursework (e.g. EdD in Education Leadership – Artificial Intelligence).
  • Regional Accreditation: Universities & colleges must hold appropriate regional accreditation in order to be considered for our rankings. Both non-profit and for-profit universities in the USA can be regionally accredited. Although every affordable online AI program on this list is offered by a non-profit school, we are also willing to consider for-profit options.
  • Tie-Breakers: If two schools are offering an affordable online master’s in AI at the same price, we will rank the R1 university first. In 2026, that meant CU Boulder’s Online MS-AI on Coursera ($15,750) ranks at #14 and Concordia University, St. Paul’s Online MSAI ($15,750) ranks at #15.

Key Findings for 2026

  • The most affordable online master’s in artificial intelligence in the USA is offered by Georgia Tech. When you include the mandatory per semester technology fee for 5 semesters, the estimated cost of this program was $8,950 in early 2026.
  • Universities in the Southeast and the Midwest regions tend to offer the cheapest online master’s in AI degrees. Our affordable rankings include 4 Georgia schools, 3 Texas schools, 2 Alabama schools, 2 Mississippi schools, and 3 Missouri schools.
  • You don’t have to sacrifice quality for price! Six schools in our affordable rankings are Carnegie R1 universities: Georgia Tech, UT Austin, CU Boulder, UNM, Mississippi State, and USF.

How to Choose an Affordable Online Master’s in AI

To keep pace with student demand, universities have been doubling down on offering low-cost online graduate programs in artificial intelligence. Our 2026 cost table now features 27 affordable online graduate degrees in AI under $20,000.

But with that choice may come confusion. It can be difficult to make a decision when you’re looking at 10+ online MSCS and MSAI programs that are all in the same price range. If you’re in this position, here are some ways to whittle your shortlist down to a few options.

Online MSCS vs. Online MSAI: Generally speaking, the MSCS is going to start with coursework in computer science “breadth” areas that are unrelated to AI. An MSAI is almost always going to launch you straight into artificial intelligence credits. Having said that, an online MSAI may not feature advanced technical electives or opportunities for self-directed research. This is where you may wish to consider an MSCS. Always check the curriculum to see which way the program is leaning. We go into more detail about the differences between the MSCS, the MSAI, and related majors in our guide to the Best Master’s in AI Programs.

Oddball Majors: Some schools now offer unique artificial intelligence programs for professionals in specific industries. Examples include Lindenwood’s arts-focused Online MA in Human-Centered Intelligence and USF’s business-focused Global Online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics. As the titles suggest, these programs will be laser-focused on AI issues within your area of expertise. If you’d prefer something that’s a little less specialist, consider the MSAI programs that ground you in AI principles and then allow you to select electives in your area of interest.

Carnegie R1 Universities vs. Smaller Schools: In our 2026 rankings of affordable online graduate AI programs, there are six Carnegie R1 public research universities. They are: Georgia Tech, UT Austin, CU Boulder, UNM, Mississippi State, and USF. Big schools like these will have the clout to fund AI labs & centers and may have valuable ties to industry & government partners. So they’re great choices if you’re interested in exploring original research ideas or tackling a real-world capstone project. If you’d prefer a more personalized online program with fewer students, smaller schools and Christian options may be more relevant.

Departmental Strengths: In the program profiles, you’ll find links to departmental websites, faculty profiles, and AI labs. Use these resources to get a sense of the “personality” of the school. For example, Dakota State and Kennesaw State might be strong picks if you’re fascinated by the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. If a capstone or thesis is included in the program, think about how the work of your professors could intersect with your research topic. Most programs provide links to faculty bios.

Unique Curriculum Elements: Employers will always want to see evidence of AI work experience and hard skills on your résumé. So keep an eye out for programs that include work on real-world industry projects, offer internships as electives, arrange virtual networking opportunities, and allow you to add graduate certificates or micro-credentials in your area of interest. Because universities are playing catch-up with AI, we always recommend chatting to recent alumni to find out if the MS coursework was outdated or too theoretical. You don’t want to pay for something you could do for free online.

Affordable FAQ

How Many Online Master’s in AI Programs in the USA Are Under $20k?

In 2026, we found 27 online master’s in AI programs from regionally accredited universities & colleges in the USA that cost under $20k. The program coordinator will be able to advise you on the typical schedule for a working professional. Recent alumni of the program will also have an excellent sense of how to juggle time commitments.

How is a Low-Cost Online Master’s in AI Perceived by Employers?

Employers don’t see the cost of an online master’s in AI on your résumé; they see the title of the degree and the name of the university. That means the value of an affordable online master’s in AI will depend on a number of factors, including:

  • The school’s reputation for technical training
  • The school’s location and ties to local industries (e.g. Texas and energy)
  • Departmental strengths in sub-fields like cyber AI
  • The relevance of the AI concentration or major
  • The chance to work on real-world projects & internships in AI

We always recommend chatting to former students before applying to any graduate program in artificial intelligence—they will know if the coursework is relevant to the workplace.
