When generative AI first showed up, many schools responded by trying to shut it out. We saw bans, detection software, stern warnings in the syllabus. That phase has mostly passed. Colleges and school districts accept that these tools are here to stay, so the new challenge is deciding how to use them responsibly and in a way that helps learning.

Educators have questions. Which tools exist, and of those, which are safe to use in academic settings? Are there training opportunities designed for educators? And perhaps the most common question, what do you do about suspicious assignments being submitted by students?

So we went and found the answers. Think of this guide as an AI resource roundup for educators. In it, we collect the AI tools, free courses, training programs, and policy discussions worth an educator’s time.

Every tool and resource is categorized by type or purpose. See the short tags on costs, target audience (K-12 educators or college faculty), and who’s behind each resource.

AI tools for teachers and faculty

The AI tools teachers actually use fall into four groups: lesson planning and course materials, adjusting reading levels of assignments and texts, automating feedback and grading, and the general “do it all” AI assistants.

First, there’s one finding you should know. In August 2025, Common Sense Media (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit) published an independent risk assessment of AI teacher assistants and labeled the entire category as Moderate Risk. They tested Google Classroom’s Gemini Teacher Assistant, Khanmigo’s Teacher Assistant, Curipod, and MagicSchool. They noted that “many platforms make it too easy to push AI-generated material directly to classrooms without review.” And the tools weren’t appropriate for high-stakes work like writing IEPs or behavior plans. The assessments are free to read if you’re interested.

Planning lessons and building materials

  • MagicSchool AI: More than 80 tools for teachers and 50 for students, covering lesson plans, rubrics, quiz generation, and IEP drafting. It is the biggest name in this category. Free tier for teachers · For-profit · K-12
  • Curipod: Builds teacher-led lessons where the entire class writes and discusses together. AI provides feedback on student writing in real time. And it aligns with more than 55 district curricula. Made by a company in Norway. Free tier · For-profit · K-12
  • Canva for Education: Design and presentation software with AI features built in, free for K-12 educators, their students, and qualified districts. You verify with a school email address or by uploading proof of employment, and it takes a few days. Canva says it will stay free for K-12. Free · For-profit · K-12
  • Eduaide.AI: Generates lesson plans, worksheets, graphic organizers, classroom games, and assessments. The free tier is permanent but caps how much you can generate. Pro costs $5.99 and removes the cap, adding translations, rubrics, image generation, and the ability to pull source material from YouTube transcripts. Free tier, paid Pro · For-profit · K-12

Adjusting reading levels and accessibility

  • Diffit: Takes a text and rewrites it at different reading levels, which is the single most tedious job in a mixed-ability classroom. Popular with teachers working with English language learners. Free tier · For-profit · K-12
  • Brisk Teaching: A browser extension rather than a separate app, so it works inside Google Docs, Microsoft Office, Canvas, Google Classroom, and YouTube. It gives feedback, changes reading levels, translates, and handles batches of assignments at once. Worth a look if you resent learning another platform. Free tier · For-profit · K-12

Feedback and grading

  • Gradescope: Grades paper exams, handwritten homework, code, and bubble sheets, and groups similar student answers together so you mark each distinct response once instead of a hundred times. Used at more than 2,600 universities. It is owned by Turnitin, which is worth knowing given what comes later on this page. AI grouping features require an institutional license.   • Formative: Interactive lessons and live assessment, so you can watch answers land while class is happening. Now part of Newsela. Its AI creation tools are branded Luna. Free plan · For-profit · K-12

General-purpose assistants

  • Khanmigo: Khan Academy’s AI tutor and teaching assistant. It handles lesson planning, rubrics, quizzes, student groupings, and exit tickets, and it is built to walk students toward an answer instead of handing it over. Free for teachers in more than 44 countries and territories. Common Sense Media rated Khanmigo Low risk, the only product rated that low among the 22 AI assessments they have published. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are what most educators reach for first, and for drafting a parent email or brainstorming a unit they work fine. Before putting any of them in front of students, read the Common Sense ratings. They assess these products specifically for use by children and teenagers, and the student-facing versions of both Gemini for K-12 and ChatGPT-5 are rated High risk. That is a judgment about student use, not about you using the tool at your desk.

Free AI courses and certificates for educators

Every course in this section is actually free. Several award a certificate your district may accept for professional development credit. This is a helpful section for those starting from zero.

  • Generative AI for Educators with Gemini: About two hours, self-paced, no cost, and it ends with a certificate you can take to your district for PD credit depending on where you teach. Built for middle and high school teachers in any subject, with no technical background needed. Google built this one itself, despite what you may read elsewhere.   • Google AI Educator Series: This is the one Google made with ISTE+ASCD, and it is separate from the course above. Three tracks cover foundational understanding, classroom application, and administrative use, and you earn badges as you go. K-12 sessions run 10 to 15 minutes.   • Microsoft Learn: AI for educators: Four modules covering how large language models work, prompt writing, responsible use, and classroom application. No prerequisites. It is the most substantial free option that treats K-12 teachers and higher education faculty as separate audiences, and it maps to both the ISTE Standards and the UNESCO AI Competency Framework. Expect a lot of Copilot. Free · Microsoft · Both
  • Common Sense Education AI courses: Three self-paced courses. AI Basics for K-12 Teachers and ChatGPT Foundations for K-12 Educators run about an hour each, and the advanced ChatGPT course takes three to five hours. The ChatGPT courses were built with OpenAI.   • Elements of AI: Not written for educators, and we are including it anyway. This is the University of Helsinki’s introduction to how AI actually works, built with MinnaLearn, and more than two million people across 170 countries have taken it. Part one needs no math or programming. Part two goes further and suggests some Python. If you want to understand the technology rather than operate a product, this is the best free thing available.   • AI for Education’s free course: A two-hour hands-on starter course, plus a prompt library, recorded webinars, and downloadable frameworks. The material is good. It is also lead generation for a consultancy that sells district training, which is fine as long as you know it going in. Free resources · For-profit consultancy · Both

Workshops and live professional development

There’s a lot of money to be made in live AI training for educators, and the gap between the free and the paid is worth understanding before you commit to anything.

  • ISTE+ASCD: The paid courses are AI Deep Dive for Educators and a follow-up AI Deep(er) Dive. The free side is larger than most people realize: GenerationAI, downloadable AI lesson plans in English, Spanish, and Arabic, a Profile of an AI-Ready Graduate, and an educator community. Free and paid · Membership organization · Both, K-12 weighted
  • Day of AI: Started at MIT in 2021 through MIT RAISE and the i2 Learning Foundation, became an independent nonprofit in August 2024, and still works with MIT. Free AI literacy lessons for students plus professional learning for teachers, offered virtually or in person. They describe themselves as tool-agnostic and say they do not promote any individual AI tool, which is worth something in a field where nearly every trainer sells software.   • MagicSchool professional development: Tiered certification, levels one through three, run by the company that makes the software. Reasonable if your school already uses MagicSchool.
  • AI for Education: Keynotes, custom workshops, policy consulting, and multi-course programs for districts. They report working with more than 250 education partners. Paid · For-profit consultancy · Both

Policy and guidance for schools and institutions

If it’s your job to write an AI policy, then these are the documents to read, all of which are free.

  • Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning: The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology published this in May 2023. It runs 71 pages and opens with the recommendation that everything else follows from, which is to keep humans in the loop. Still the clearest statement of the federal position.   • Empowering Education Leaders: A Toolkit for Safe, Ethical, and Equitable AI Integration: The follow-up, published October 2024, running 79 pages across ten modules covering privacy, data security, civil rights, and digital equity. It puts real weight on giving students, teachers, and parents a way to opt out. Free · U.S. Department of Education · K-12 leadership

  • TeachAI: A coalition working with the World Economic Forum. Their AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit is the practical one, built around real examples from districts that have already written their policies. Free · Coalition · K-12 leadership
  • EDUCAUSE: If you work in higher education, start here rather than anywhere else on this page. Their library holds AI Literacy in Teaching and Learning: A Durable Framework for Higher Education, a 2026 report on AI’s impact on learning assessment, ethical guidelines from 2025, and a student guide to AI produced with AAC&U. AI detectors and academic integrity

What the research actually says about AI detectors

AI writing detector use by schools and educators has grown dramatically over the past couple of years. The models (and the research into them) have evolved so quickly that advice written in 2023 is now out of date. Here’s our take on what educators should know about AI writing detectors.

The early evidence was bad. In August 2023, Vanderbilt University turned off Turnitin’s AI detector and showed its work. Turnitin claimed a false positive rate under 1%. Vanderbilt submitted 75,000 papers in 2022. One percent of that is roughly 750 wrongly accused students, which the university decided was not acceptable. They also noted that Turnitin would not explain how the detector reached its conclusions.

Testing through 2024 backed up this finding. Illinois State University’s Center for Integrated Professional Development summarized the problem and cited work by Cooperman and Brandão finding detectors are accurate 63% of the time, with false positive rates between 24.5% and 25%. And running text through a paraphrasing tool cut accuracy by more than half.

The picture started to change this past year. A 2025 study, “Can we trust academic AI detective?”, tested three detectors against 250 human-written articles and 750 generated ones and found GPTZero flagged none of the human papers incorrectly. A 2026 study in the International Journal for Educational Integrity compared GPTZero, Pangram, Copyleaks, and Turnitin across 160 documents where the researchers knew the origin of every one. Pangram performed best, and the authors reported that false positives were rare across all four tools. That’s an improvement on earlier studies. When running Pangram against 1,163 real master’s theses they found 45.5% flagged, but mostly at low to moderate levels.

The takeaway is that the tools are getting better, but there’s a larger debate around use of AI detectors that’s worth having.

Writing in the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management in 2026, Bassett and colleagues say that generative AI detection should not be used in education at all, and not because of its accuracy. Plagiarism detection points at a source document you can go read, but AI detection produces a probability (“score”) with nothing to check for confirmation. Nobody actually knows who wrote the text, and the usual workarounds, like checking linguistic markers or running a second tool, introduce “confirmation bias rather than independent verification.” That, and it overlooks how there’s an enormous middle ground of work made with AI rather than entirely by it. Academic misconduct decisions are supposed to meet what they call the “balance of probabilities” standard, and a detector score does not clear that bar.

There are additional findings that muddy the waters. For example, AI detectors flag some students far more often than others. The University of San Diego’s Pardee Legal Research Center, in a guide updated in July 2026, found students with autism, ADHD, or dyslexia and ESL students get flagged at higher rates than native English speakers. That’s usually because detectors read repeated phrasing and predictable sentence structure as machine-generated. This is a concern Vanderbilt raised back in 2023. Improved overall accuracy does not fix a problem if some students can be unfairly punished.

So what’s a practical takeaway from the current research? An AI detector score can give you a reason to look closer at a student’s work, but it is not evidence of wrongdoing and should never be the sole reason for a grade deduction or misconduct decision.

Update: Shortly after we published this guide, news broke that many top universities banned or discouraged the use of AI detection software.

  • Schools like Yale, Johns Hopkins, and Indiana University banned or discouraged the use of AI detectors.
  • Georgetown, NYU, and nearly a dozen others abandoned Turnitin’s AI detection tools, which produce false positives more frequently than initially thought.
  • IU’s Kelley School of Business branded the technology “highly unreliable.”

What to do instead

Both Vanderbilt and MIT Sloan published alternatives that overlap almost completely. Say clearly in the syllabus what AI use is and is not allowed, and give examples. Go one step further and explain the reasoning out loud in class. You could even ask students to submit a short statement describing what tools they used and how. Then, design assignments around current events, class discussion, or students’ own experience, which is harder for AI to generate. You could add a brief oral component where students talk through their own work. And build in more than one kind of assessment so that no single tool or test carries all the weight of weeding out AI use.

  • MIT Sloan Teaching & Learning Technologies: The clearest short write-up of why detectors fail and what to do about it, with real examples including detectors flagging the U.S. Constitution as AI-written and OpenAI shutting down its own detection tool for poor accuracy.   • Classroom policies for AI generative tools: Lance Eaton has been collecting real syllabus AI policies from instructors since January 2023, sortable by discipline and institution. If you are staring at a blank syllabus section, this is faster than writing from scratch. He keeps a companion collection of institutional AI policies as well. Brisk’s Inspect Writing feature takes a different approach, replaying how a document was actually written from first keystroke to last instead of guessing at the finished text. It sidesteps the probability problem. It is also new, and the company publishes no data on how reliably it distinguishes normal drafting from misconduct, so treat it the same way you would treat a detector score.

AI literacy resources to use with students

Teachers also need materials they can use to teach students about AI, especially at the K-12 levels. The following are free options to help with that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI for educators?

There is no single best AI tool for educators. It really depends on which part of the job you want help with. Khanmigo is the strongest all-round starting point, because it is free for teachers, comes from a nonprofit, and is the one classroom product independent reviewers at Common Sense Media rated lowest for risk. Teachers building worksheets and lesson plans tend to use MagicSchool, whereas those dealing with a range of reading levels in their classrooms tend to use Diffit. Whichever you choose, please check out what the tool does with student data before using it.

Is there a free AI for teachers?

Yes, but usually with limitations. Khanmigo is free once your teaching status is verified, and Canva for Education is free for K-12 educators and their students. MagicSchool, Diffit, Brisk, Curipod, Formative, and Eduaide all run permanent free tiers, though each caps how much you can generate before asking for a paid subscription. Training is the better bargain, because the educator courses from Google, Microsoft, and Common Sense Media are free and carry no upsell, and the U.S. Department of Education’s guidance reports are free to download.

Is there a ChatGPT for teachers?

There are several ChatGPT-style tools for educators, each with their own unique (and important) differences. Khanmigo is the closest thing to a purpose-built teaching assistant, made to walk a student toward an answer instead of just giving it. MagicSchool and Eduaide.AI wrap similar underlying technology in menus organized around teacher work, so instead of a chat box you get a button that says “rubric generator” (or similar). ChatGPT itself is perfectly good for drafting a newsletter or brainstorming a unit at your own desk. Putting it in front of students is a separate decision, and we’d argue you should first review Common Sense Media’s risk assessment of the student-facing version.
